Common Codes and Errors

Saint Louis University's registration process incorporates a number of codes and abbreviations. Find out more about SLU course information, building abbreviations and errors you may encounter.

Course Attributes

If a course is restricted to a certain population, meets certain requirements or requires that you have additional information, you will find it in the course attributes area.

Restricted Attributes
  • 1818 Advanced College Credit: This course is restricted to high school students enrolled in the 1818 Advanced College Credit program.
  • First-Year Interest Group Only: This course is restricted to students in the individual first-year interest groups.
  • Honors Program Students Only: This course is restricted to students who are admitted in the honors program.
  • International Students Only: This course is restricted to international students.
  • Madrid Course: This course is taught on the Madrid, Spain campus and therefore restricted to Madrid students.
  • Micah House Students Only: This course is restricted to students in the Micah House program.
  • Prof. Studies Students Only: This course is restricted to School for Professional Studies Students. Please contact the School for Professional Studies for additional information.
Meets Requirements Attributes

Some departments will indicate which major requirement the course fills (such as the modern European requirement for SLU’s undergraduate history major). Other attributes you may encounter include:

  • Cult Div: Global Citizenship: The class fills the Global Citizenship requirement for the Arts and Sciences’ core curriculum.
  • Cult Div: Diversity in the US:  This class fills the Diversity in the U.S. requirement for the Arts and Sciences' core curriculum.
  • Film Studies: This class will count toward the film studies minor. You do not need to be in that program to take this course.
  • International Studies: This class will count toward the international studies major. You do not need to be in that program to take this course.
  • Catholic Studies Program: This class will count toward the Catholic studies minor (formally known as the Manresa program). You do not need to be in that program to take this course.  
  • Women's and Gender Studies: This class will count toward the women's and gender studies major or minor. You do not need to be in that program to take this course.
Additional Information
  • SLU Inquiry: Classes are primarily limited to freshmen.
  • Service Learning: The course will include a service component.

Common Registration Errors

The following is a list of the most commonly experienced registration errors. Learn  how each problem can be resolved.

An error has prevented the processing of your transaction. Please inform your registrar that a processing error has occurred.

A system malfunction has occurred. Contact the office of the University registrar and specify the course or courses for which you were attempting to register.

Adviser Authorization

You need to complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with your adviser's signature.

Classification Error

Your classification (freshman, sophomore, etc.) is restricted from registration in this section. You will need to complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with signatures from both the instructor and your adviser to register. Note: SLU Inquiry sections are restricted to freshmen and sophomores.

Closed Section

The section of the course is full or the number of registered students has reached the maximum indicated by the department. If no other section is offered, contact the department and request permission to enroll.

Closed Section X

Maximum enrollment has been reached for all available sections cross-listed for this course offering. Contact the department and request permission to enroll.

College Restriction

College restriction errors indicate you may be restricted from registration in this section due to the college in which you are enrolled.

If you receive a college error when attempting to register, check the building location of the course. If the building code indicates either SON or AHP, the course is restricted to students in the School of Nursing or Doisy College. Contact the department and obtain a signature on a Registration/Change of Registration form in order to be registered in the course.

CORQ_(Subject Course #) REQ

Some courses require that you register for another course simultaneously. The course for which you must register is indicated within the error message.

Dean Authorization

You need to complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with your dean's signature.

Department Permission

You need to complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with the academic department chair’s signature.

Honors Adviser Permission
Complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with your honors academic adviser's signature.
Instructor’s Signature
Complete a Registration/Change of Registration form with the instructor's signature.
Level Restriction
Your student level is restricted from registration in this section. See your adviser and obtain their signature on a Registration/Change of Registration form in order to be registered in the course.
Major Restriction

Your major is restricted from registration in this section. See your adviser and obtain their signature on a Registration/Change of Registration form in order to be registered in the course.

Link Error

Some lecture, lab and discussion sections are linked to one another to ensure students do not register for one without the other.

  • L# indicates that you are attempting to register for a lab or discussion section without the appropriate lecture section.
  • B# indicates that you are attempting to register for a lecture without the appropriate lab section.  Lab section numbers generally range from 36-49.
  • D# indicates that you are attempting to register for a lecture without the appropriate discussion section.
PREQ or Test Score Error

You have not fulfilled the prerequisites which are required to take this section. Reference the catalog entry for the course to view the prerequisites and verify that you have indeed met all requirements. If you have, contact the office of the University registrar for assistance.

Reserve Closed

This registration error most commonly occurs when the section is a SLU Inquiry course ("SLU Inquiry" or "SINQ" in the course listing), which are limited to freshman and sophomore students.

  • If maximum enrollment = 19 then the course allows for 13 freshmen and 6 sophomore students
  • If maximum enrollment = 15 then the course allows for 8 freshmen and 7 sophomore students.
  • If no other section is offered, contact the instructor and request their permission to enroll.
You are not permitted to register at this time.
